The Science Behind Multi-Modal Notes

Research shows that using multiple note-taking methods significantly improves learning and retention. Here's why each method works:

Why Drawing Works

"Drawing is better than writing for memory retention"

Research from the University of Waterloo found that drawing activates multiple cognitive processes simultaneously:

  • Dual coding: Information stored both verbally and visually
  • Motor engagement: Physical act strengthens memory traces
  • Elaborative processing: Adding details reinforces understanding

Key finding: "Even individuals who do not consider themselves skilled at drawing benefit greatly from the process."

Why Voice Notes Work

Multi-sensory engagement enhances retention. When you verbalize your understanding:

  • Brain activation: Auditory cortex + motor cortex for speech
  • Active processing: Explaining forces deeper understanding
  • Retrievable references: Audio recordings for later review
"Recording lectures or discussing concepts aloud can aid in retention. Repeating key points out loud while writing notes is a great strategy for reinforcing what you've learned."

Why Text Notes Still Matter

While handwriting has benefits over typing, digital text notes offer unique advantages:

  • Searchable: Find notes quickly across all videos
  • Shareable: Export and share notes with others
  • Linked: Jump to exact video moments from your notes
Research conclusion: The most effective approach is to use multiple note-taking methods together. BrightClips makes this easy by offering all three in one place, each linked to specific video timestamps.
